You are awake but nothing is getting through.

You think you are stupid. You think your brain is broken. You think everyone else can function and you are the one who cannot get it together.

Your brain is not broken. It is running on reserve power. The Fog is a circuit breaker that tripped because the system was running too hot for too long. You are not stupid. You are depleted. The screen dimmed before the phone shut off.

  • Cold water on your face. Cup cold water in your hands and press it against your closed eyes and forehead for 10 seconds. The trigeminal nerve activates.
  • Open a window or step outside. Novel sensory input that the fog has been filtering out.
  • Five rounds of coherent breathing. In for 5, out for 5 through the nose. The Fog does not have the energy for an intense practice. This asks almost nothing.
  • Do not drink more coffee. Temporary spike followed by deeper crash.
  • Do not force productivity. Your prefrontal cortex is running at low power.
  • Do not do intense breathwork. Connected breathing rounds will either produce nothing or a crash into The Floor.

They think the problem is motivation. They believe they should be able to push through. The Fog is not a motivation problem. It is a circuit breaker that has tripped. Fighting it with willpower burns the reserves faster. The path through The Fog is gentle sensory input and rest, not force.
