The Lock

Your body is holding something it will not let you feel.

Reality check

You think you are strong for holding it together. You think this is discipline. You think the people who break down are the ones with the problem.

You are not strong. You are braced. Your muscles locked around something and never got the signal that it was safe to let go. The energy it costs to maintain this is enormous but no one can see it, including you.

  • Put one hand on your belly. Breathe into it. If nothing moves, stay with it. Even a millimeter of movement means the diaphragm is starting to unlock.
  • Exhale with sound. Open your mouth and let a long "ahhhh" come out on the exhale. Five rounds. The jaw is a primary holding site. Sound opens it.
  • Roll your neck slowly. Five circles each direction. Let the head be heavy.
  • Do not force yourself to cry or feel something. The Lock does not respond to demand.
  • Do not stretch without breathing. The muscles will snap right back.
  • Do not tell yourself to just relax. The instruction does not reach the part that is holding.

They try to release The Lock through discipline: meditation apps, stretching routines, massage appointments. They perform relaxation the same way they perform control. The Lock does not release to discipline. It releases when the body receives the signal that it is safe to let go.
