Reality check

You think you are high energy. You think this is just how you are wired. You think people who need to slow down are less capable.

You are not high energy. You are overactivated. Your nervous system has been running in sympathetic mode without discharge. The agitation is not productivity. It is a fire alarm you have learned to ignore.

  • Hands in cold water. Fill a bowl with the coldest water from the tap. Submerge both hands for 30 seconds. The mammalian dive reflex drops your heart rate involuntarily.
  • Shake your body. Stand up. Shake everything. Hard. For 30 seconds. The excess activation needs a physical channel.
  • Then sit down. Coherent breathing: in for 5, out for 5 through the nose. One minute. The shaking burned off the top layer. Now the slow breathing can land.
  • Do not add more stimulation. No loud music, no scrolling, no phone calls.
  • Do not try to be productive. The urge to start tasks feels like energy. It is agitation.
  • Do not drink more caffeine.

They confuse agitation with energy and try to channel it into productivity. They start six tasks, reorganize their desk, answer emails rapidly. None of it completes. The nervous system needs physical discharge followed by enforced stillness, not more output.
