The Ghost

You are there, but you are not there.

Reality check

You think you are fine. You think you are just a bit tired or distracted. You think the slight disconnection is normal.

You are not fine and the disconnection is not normal. Your nervous system has partially separated awareness from physical sensation because being fully present became too expensive. You are watching your own life from behind glass.

  • Cold water on your face. Splash it hard. Forehead, eyes, back of the neck. The sensory input is too loud to ignore.
  • Wiggle your toes. Then press your feet into the floor. Then notice the pressure.
  • Name 5 things you can see. Out loud if possible. Speaking forces engagement. The voice vibrating in your chest is itself a grounding sensation.
  • Do not try to think yourself back. Dissociation is a body state, not a mind state.
  • Do not drive or operate anything dangerous without grounding first.
  • Do not scroll. The screen reinforces disconnection. You need physical sensation.

They do not take it seriously because they can still function. The Ghost walks, talks, works, and socializes. Nothing looks wrong. But functioning in dissociation means every experience is received through a filter. The memories are hazy. The connections are shallow. Taking 60 seconds to ground is not dramatic, but it is the difference between being present for your life and spectating it.
