Freediving in Koh Samui is an experience unlike any other. The serene waters, vibrant marine life, and the sense of complete freedom beneath the surface make it a sought-after adventure for anyone who loves the ocean.
However, many people feel hesitant when they hear the word "freediving." They think it’s an extreme sport reserved only for daredevils, athletes, or people with lungs like a fish. But here's the truth: freediving is for everyone, and it's more about relaxation and connection than you might think.
In this blog, we’ll break down exactly what freediving is, how a typical course looks, and address the common fears people have about trying it for the first time. If you’re reading this and feeling intrigued but unsure, stick with us—we’ll clear up any misconceptions and show you why freediving in Koh Samui could be one of the most transformative experiences of your life. And, as a bonus, we’ll offer a special incentive at the end to get you diving with confidence!
What Is Freediving?
At its core, freediving is diving underwater while holding your breath. Unlike scuba diving, you don’t rely on an oxygen tank. Freedivers depend on their ability to control their breath and stay calm underwater. This might sound intense, but in reality, freediving is as much about mindfulness as it is about technique. It's about learning to stay relaxed, conserve oxygen, and enjoy the experience of being in the water.
Freediving allows you to explore the underwater world without bulky equipment, giving you an unmatched feeling of freedom. Competitive freedivers may push the limits by diving to extreme depths and holding their breath for minutes at a time. However, most freediving is recreational, and with proper training, anyone can safely dive to depths between 10 and 20 meters—even on their first course!
Common Misconceptions About Freediving
When people hear about freediving, they often imagine something far more intense than it really is. Some common fears include:
“Freediving is only for athletes.” Many think freediving requires incredible physical fitness, but the truth is that it’s about breath control, relaxation, and technique more than raw physical strength.
“I could never hold my breath that long.” While it’s true that freedivers train to extend their breath-holding abilities, it doesn’t start with long breath holds. In your first course, you’ll learn techniques to relax your body and mind, which naturally increases how long you can comfortably stay underwater.
“It’s too dangerous.” Safety is a top priority in every freediving course. You’ll be guided by certified instructors, and we teach students how to dive safely, including techniques for handling pressure changes and staying calm. We also emphasize buddy systems to ensure that no one dives alone.
“I’m afraid of the pressure on my ears.” Equalizing ear pressure is a common concern for new freedivers, but we spend plenty of time teaching you how to do this correctly. Like everything in freediving, it’s a skill that can be mastered with practice.
What to Expect From Our Freediving Course in Koh Samui
Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s dive into what a typical two-day freediving course looks like at Breathflow Connection in Koh Samui.
Before the Course: Connecting with Your Group
Once you sign up for the course, we’ll create a WhatsApp group where you'll connect with the other students. This is a great opportunity to get familiar with your fellow divers and ask any initial questions. We’ll also schedule a day before the course for everyone to meet, sign the necessary documents, and try on the freediving equipment. This pre-course meeting takes about 2.5 hours and covers all the essential theory behind freediving.
During this session, you’ll learn about:
All the different ways you can do Freediving
All the basics about the Equipment
Techniques for body positions & diving efficiently
Balancing pressure in the body
Breathing techniques used in Freediving
By the end of the theory session, you’ll feel much more confident about what lies ahead and be eager to get in the water!
Day 1: Your First Dive
On the first day, we’ll begin the practical part of your training. The goal of Day 1 is to help you reach a depth of up to 12 meters, or around 40 feet. Don’t worry if that sounds intimidating—everything is done step-by-step, and you’ll have the guidance of an experienced instructor the whole time.
Here’s what a typical Day 1 looks like:
We’ll start the morning by picking you up from your hotel and driving to the pier.
From there, we’ll board a local scuba diving boat, usually operated by Member Diving or Silent Divers, and take an hour-long ride to the dive site.
Once we arrive, we’ll spend 2-3 hours in the water practicing the techniques you learned during the theory session.
Afterward, we’ll enjoy lunch on the boat and relax on the return trip. You’ll be back at your hotel by around 4 PM.
Day 2: Going Deeper and Learning Safety
Day 2 focuses on diving deeper and ensuring that you’re well-prepared in terms of safety and rescue techniques. By the end of the day, you’ll have the opportunity to dive to a maximum depth of 20 meters (about 65 feet).
Here’s how Day 2 unfolds:
The morning starts much like Day 1: we’ll pick you up, head to the pier, and take the boat to the dive site.
In the water, you’ll work on refining your technique and get a chance to dive deeper than on Day 1.
We’ll also teach you safety and rescue procedures. You’ll learn how to perform safety checks and rescue maneuvers using the buddy system. Safety is paramount, and this part of the course is designed to ensure that you can dive confidently and securely.
By the end of the second day, if you’ve demonstrated proficiency in both diving and safety techniques, you’ll receive your official freediving certification!
Addressing Common Fears and Resistance
It's normal to feel a bit apprehensive before trying freediving for the first time, especially if you’ve never done anything like it before. But here’s the thing: most of the fear comes from not knowing what to expect. Our job is to make sure you feel completely prepared, safe, and supported throughout the experience.
One of the main reasons people hesitate is the fear of the unknown. They worry about things like not being able to equalize ear pressure, not being able to hold their breath, or simply feeling overwhelmed underwater. But with the right training and guidance, these fears fade quickly.
You’ll be surprised by how much your body is capable of when you learn to trust it and relax.
At Breathflow Connection, we take every possible step to ensure your safety and comfort. Our courses are led by experienced instructors, and we maintain small class sizes so that each student gets personalized attention. Whether it’s your first time in the water or you’re a seasoned diver looking to deepen your skills, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
